I have been a volunteer for the Vancouver and Burnaby Special Olympics for the past 25 years. What started out as an opportunity for me to “help,” transformed itself into the athletes, coaches and family members assisting me in understanding more about myself.
Over the course of this 25 years, I have been consistently amazed by the athletes in their passion for their sport along with the enjoyment they derive from participating. The coaches, volunteers and parents have exhibited countless acts of mentoring, kindness and love that I would never have expected from one unacquainted human being to another. The Special Olympics has guided me in becoming the man I always wanted to be.
